SWF (Shockwave Flash) is Adobe's old Flash format — a vector timeline that bundled animation, embedded video, and ActionScript into a single playable file. Since Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020 and blocked Flash content from running on January 12, 2021, those .swf files no longer open in any browser. This converter rescues the content by rendering the SWF's visual timeline into a flat video and wrapping it in ASF (Advanced Systems Format), Microsoft's Windows Media container. The interactive layer does not survive — you get a fixed-resolution recording of what plays on screen, not a clickable Flash file.

No. ASF is a linear video container, so buttons, clickable menus, and anything driven by ActionScript become a flat recording of whatever plays on screen. Only the visual timeline is captured. If you need the original interactivity, keep the .swf and play it in the Ruffle emulator rather than converting it.
Some Flash files build their animation entirely in ActionScript with no frames on the main timeline. Because there is nothing for the converter to "play" frame by frame, the rendered ASF can come out blank or static. Those files generally need a live screen recording from inside a Flash emulator instead of a file conversion.
By default this converter writes H.264 video and WMA v2 audio into the ASF container. ASF can carry many codecs — Microsoft designed it to hold compressed or uncompressed streams — so under Advanced Options you can switch the video codec (for example to WMV 2 or MPEG-4) or the audio codec if a specific Windows Media tool requires it.
Because SWF is vector-based, it has no single "native" pixel size — the converter rasterizes it at whatever output resolution you set. Match the dimensions your source was designed for, or pick a standard Preset Resolution. In our testing, choosing the Very High quality preset with a 1280x720 preset resolution produced a clean ASF from a simple banner-style animation without visible scaling artifacts.
ASF is a dated, Windows-centric container, and Microsoft now treats the Windows Media Format SDK as a legacy feature. It is fine if your archive lives in a Windows Media ecosystem, but for long-term, cross-platform preservation an MP4 (H.264) or a lossless capture is more durable. ASF makes most sense when you specifically need .asf/.wmv playback.
