A .3gpp file is a mobile-phone video container — the same format as .3gp, both standardized by the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project). This tool pulls the audio track out of that video and re-encodes it as OGA, the audio-only Ogg format, which on this converter holds Vorbis by default. The video is discarded; you keep only the sound. Because 3GP/3GPP audio is usually AMR or AAC — both lossy — and Vorbis is also lossy, this is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode: it won't recover quality the original recording never had, but Vorbis is efficient and stays near-transparent at sensible bitrates.

The audio inside a 3GP/3GPP file is already lossy — usually AMR or AAC — so re-encoding to Vorbis cannot restore detail that was discarded when the phone first recorded it. What you can do is avoid adding much new loss: keep the bitrate at or above the source's. In our testing, extracting AAC audio from a typical phone clip to Vorbis at 128–192 kbps is transparent for everyday listening, with the OGA roughly matching the source audio's size.
Both are the Ogg container. Historically .ogg covered everything, but in 2007 Xiph.Org recommended .oga for audio-only files and .ogv for video, a split later formalized in RFC 5334 (2008). On this tool, .oga carries Vorbis-encoded audio by default. Many players treat .oga and .ogg interchangeably, so a renamed file usually still plays.
OGA/Vorbis plays in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Android, VLC, and most open-source players, but the Apple ecosystem only gained native Vorbis-in-Ogg support in Safari 18.4 (2025); older macOS, iOS, and many consumer devices won't open it. If you need a file that plays almost anywhere, convert to MP3 instead, or use 3GP to MP3 for the identical input.
OGA is an audio-only format, so this conversion is an audio extraction: the tool reads the 3GPP container, takes the audio track, and writes it to Ogg. The video stream is intentionally dropped. If you want to keep the picture, you'd convert to a video format rather than to OGA.
Not as OGA — the Ogg audio container is paired here with Vorbis, Opus, FLAC, or Speex, not AMR or AAC. If your goal is to preserve the exact AAC track from the 3GPP file without re-encoding the codec, convert to AAC instead, which keeps it in the AAC family.
