3GPP to VOB Converter

A .3gpp file is the same mobile-phone video container as .3gp — both are the 3GPP format used by older phones and camcorders, typically holding low-resolution H.263, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio. VOB (Video Object) is the DVD-Video container: an MPEG-2 program stream carrying MPEG-2 video plus AC-3, MP2, or LPCM audio, the kind of file you find inside a disc's VIDEO_TS folder. This converter transcodes your small mobile clip into the MPEG-2/VOB container so it can be fed into DVD-authoring software. Because a 3GPP source is low-resolution by design, re-encoding to MPEG-2 cannot add detail it never had — it adapts the container and codec, not the picture quality.

3GPP Format at a Glance

Property Value
Container 3GPP (.3gp / .3gpp — same format)
Standard 3GPP TS 26.244, an MP4/ISO base-media derivative
Typical video codec H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264/AVC
Typical audio codec AMR-NB, AMR-WB, or AAC
Resolution Usually low — QCIF, CIF, up to 480p on later phones
Best for Recording and sharing clips on older mobile devices

VOB Format at a Glance

Property Value
Container VOB (Video Object), an MPEG-2 program stream
Standard Part of the DVD-Video specification
Video codec MPEG-2 (the default this tool outputs)
Audio codec AC-3, MP2, or LPCM
Extras it can carry Subpictures, DVD menus, navigation packets
Lives in A disc's VIDEO_TS folder, alongside .IFO and .BUP files
Best for DVD-authoring prep and DVD-player playback

How to Convert 3GPP to VOB

  1. Upload Your 3GPP File: Drag and drop your .3gp or .3gpp file onto the page, or click "+ Add Files." You can queue several clips and convert them with the same settings.
  2. Set the Quality Preset: Open Advanced Options and choose a Quality Preset, or set a Specific file size or Constant Bitrate. The output uses the MPEG-2 video codec required by the DVD-Video spec.
  3. Adjust Resolution or Trim (Optional): Use Preset Resolutions or Width x Height to match a DVD frame size, and use Trim with a Time Range to keep only the part you need.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and download your VOB. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a .vob file the same as a playable DVD?

No. A bare .vob is just the video container. A DVD-Video disc also needs the full VIDEO_TS structure — .IFO and .BUP navigation files plus correctly split VOB segments — built by authoring software such as DVDStyler or DVD Flick. This tool produces the VOB stream you feed into that authoring step; it does not assemble a complete VIDEO_TS folder or burn a disc on its own.

Will converting 3GPP to VOB improve the video quality?

No. A 3GPP clip is low-resolution by design, and re-encoding into MPEG-2 cannot recreate detail that was never recorded. Converting to VOB changes the container and codec so DVD tools can read the file — it does not upscale or sharpen the picture.

Why does the VOB output use MPEG-2 instead of H.264?

The DVD-Video specification requires MPEG-2 video (with AC-3, MP2, or LPCM audio), so this tool encodes to MPEG-2 to keep the file standards-compliant for DVD authoring. In our testing, MPEG-2 at DVD bitrates produces noticeably larger files than the H.264 in a modern MP4, which is expected because MPEG-2 is an older, less efficient codec.

Should I convert to VOB or to MP4 for normal playback?

For phones, browsers, and media players, MP4 with H.264 is smaller and far more widely supported. Only choose VOB if you specifically need a file for DVD authoring. For everyday playback, convert your clip with 3GPP to MP4 instead.

Does .3gpp behave differently from .3gp in this converter?

No. .3gpp and .3gp are two extensions for the same 3GPP container, so they convert identically. If your source file uses the .3gp extension, you can use the 3GP to VOB page — the output is the same.

Are my uploaded files kept private?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and your files are never shared or made public.
