How to Convert 3GPP to VOB

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a .vob file the same as a playable DVD?
No. A bare .vob is just the video container. A DVD-Video disc also needs the full VIDEO_TS structure — .IFO and .BUP navigation files plus correctly split VOB segments — built by authoring software such as DVDStyler or DVD Flick. This tool produces the VOB stream you feed into that authoring step; it does not assemble a complete VIDEO_TS folder or burn a disc on its own.
Will converting 3GPP to VOB improve the video quality?
No. A 3GPP clip is low-resolution by design, and re-encoding into MPEG-2 cannot recreate detail that was never recorded. Converting to VOB changes the container and codec so DVD tools can read the file — it does not upscale or sharpen the picture.
Why does the VOB output use MPEG-2 instead of H.264?
The DVD-Video specification requires MPEG-2 video (with AC-3, MP2, or LPCM audio), so this tool encodes to MPEG-2 to keep the file standards-compliant for DVD authoring. In our testing, MPEG-2 at DVD bitrates produces noticeably larger files than the H.264 in a modern MP4, which is expected because MPEG-2 is an older, less efficient codec.
Should I convert to VOB or to MP4 for normal playback?
For phones, browsers, and media players, MP4 with H.264 is smaller and far more widely supported. Only choose VOB if you specifically need a file for DVD authoring. For everyday playback, convert your clip with 3GPP to MP4 instead.
Does .3gpp behave differently from .3gp in this converter?
No. .3gpp and .3gp are two extensions for the same 3GPP container, so they convert identically. If your source file uses the .3gp extension, you can use the 3GP to VOB page — the output is the same.
What frame size should I choose for a DVD-compliant VOB?
DVD-Video allows only a few fixed frame sizes: 720x480 (or 704x480) at 29.97 fps for NTSC, and 720x576 (or 704x576) at 25 fps for PAL. Set the resolution to match the standard your DVD player and authoring tool expect. Because a 3GPP clip is typically QCIF or CIF, scaling it up to 720x480 will not add real detail — the picture stays as soft as the source — but it keeps the file within the frame sizes DVD authoring requires.
What happens to my 3GPP's AMR or AAC audio in the VOB?
It is re-encoded. DVD-Video does not allow AMR or raw AAC audio; a VOB carries AC-3 (Dolby Digital), MPEG-1/2 Layer II (MP2), or LPCM. So the mobile-clip soundtrack is transcoded into a DVD-legal audio codec during conversion. That extra lossy step is unavoidable for DVD compatibility, but at normal DVD audio bitrates the difference is hard to hear on the low-fidelity audio a phone recorded.
How much video fits on a DVD once it's a VOB?
DVD capacity is about playback bitrate, not just minutes. A single-layer DVD holds roughly 4.7 GB, and MPEG-2 at typical DVD video bitrates of 4–8 Mbit/s fits around one to two hours; lowering the bitrate fits more at the cost of picture quality. Your 3GPP source is low-resolution, so it will not need a high bitrate to look as good as it can — but DVD-spec MPEG-2 encoding is still far less space-efficient than the H.264 in an MP4.
