A .3gpp file is the same mobile-phone video container as .3gp — both are the 3GPP format used by older phones and camcorders, typically holding low-resolution H.263, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio. VOB (Video Object) is the DVD-Video container: an MPEG-2 program stream carrying MPEG-2 video plus AC-3, MP2, or LPCM audio, the kind of file you find inside a disc's VIDEO_TS folder. This converter transcodes your small mobile clip into the MPEG-2/VOB container so it can be fed into DVD-authoring software. Because a 3GPP source is low-resolution by design, re-encoding to MPEG-2 cannot add detail it never had — it adapts the container and codec, not the picture quality.

In our testing, MPEG-2 at DVD bitrates produces noticeably larger files than the H.264 in a modern MP4, which is expected because MPEG-2 is an older, less efficient codec.
For phones, browsers, and media players, MP4 with H.264 is smaller and far more widely supported. Only choose VOB if you specifically need a file for DVD authoring. For everyday playback, convert your clip with 3GPP to MP4 instead.
