ARW is Sony's Alpha RAW photo format — the unprocessed sensor data straight off an α, Cyber-shot, or RX camera. MOV is Apple's QuickTime video container. Converting ARW to MOV does not create motion: it renders the RAW photo and holds it on screen as a single still frame for a duration you choose, producing a short, silent video clip. That is exactly what you want when you need to drop a Sony still onto a Final Cut Pro or QuickTime timeline, or hand a photo to a tool that only ingests video.
The output is a one-shot still-image clip, not animation. There is no panning, no Ken Burns effect, and no audio track — the frame does not change for the length of the clip. The conversion does two jobs in sequence: first it renders (demosaics) the RAW Bayer data into a viewable RGB image, then it encodes that single image into a MOV file at the duration you set. If you only need a viewable picture and not a video, convert to a still image instead with ARW to JPG.

No. The conversion holds your rendered ARW as one motionless frame for the chosen duration, and the clip has no audio track. If you need movement, you would have to build that from multiple frames in a video editor — a single ARW cannot animate itself.
ARW stores raw Bayer sensor data at 12 or 14 bits per channel, which no video codec can display directly. The file is first demosaiced into a standard RGB image, then that image is encoded into the MOV. This is the same rendering step any RAW editor performs before showing you the photo.
By default the MOV is encoded with H.264, which QuickTime Player, macOS, iOS, and Final Cut Pro all open natively. H.264 keeps the file portable; you can re-encode to another codec later if your editor needs a specific intermediate format.
Yes — that is the main reason to make one. A still-image MOV behaves like a clip of fixed length, so you can place it on a timeline, trim it, and crossfade it like any other footage. The duration you set here becomes the clip's length before any trimming in the editor.
MOV is the better fit for Apple editing software, but MP4 is more universally playable across phones, browsers, and Windows. If your goal is to share the clip widely rather than edit it on a Mac, use ARW to MP4 instead. Both produce the same kind of still-image clip; only the container and default codec differ.
No. The 12-to-14-bit RAW latitude exists only in the ARW file itself. Once the frame is rendered to an 8-bit-per-channel video, the highlight and shadow recovery headroom is baked in. Do your exposure and color edits on the RAW first; treat the MOV as a final, display-ready export.
In our testing, a single full-resolution Sony frame rendered to a 5-second 1080p H.264 MOV at the Very High preset came out in the low single-digit megabytes — far smaller than the source ARW, because video compression discards the per-pixel RAW data the photo carried. Longer durations and higher resolutions increase the size proportionally.
