AV1 is the modern, royalty-free codec from the Alliance for Open Media, finalized in 2018 and built for efficient 4K/8K streaming. MPEG (.mpeg) is the decades-old MPEG program stream that legacy players, DVD authoring chains, and broadcast ingest systems still expect. This guide walks you through the conversion, explains the settings that matter, and is honest about one thing up front: AV1 to MPEG is a modern-to-legacy downconvert — you do it for compatibility, not for quality.
The File Compression group is where this conversion succeeds or pixelates, because MPEG-2 is far less efficient than AV1 and needs a higher bitrate to look the same. Match the mode to your goal:
If your goal is a smaller file, sharper picture, or playback on a phone, browser, or current editor, MPEG is the wrong target — convert AV1 to MP4 with H.264 instead, which plays nearly everywhere and stays far smaller than MPEG-2. AV1 to MPEG only makes sense when the destination is genuinely old: a pre-2010 set-top box, a DVD/VCD authoring chain, or a broadcast system that ingests MPEG program streams. Conversion also can't bypass DRM — protected or copy-restricted source files won't process.
No. AV1 is already a lossy, highly efficient codec, and the MPEG-2 video inside the .mpeg output is lossy and far less efficient. Re-encoding from one lossy format to another cannot recover detail — at best it preserves what's there, and aggressive bitrate or resolution cuts will visibly degrade it. Convert to MPEG for legacy compatibility, not for a quality gain.
MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio by default, which is what DVD-Video, SVCD, broadcast ingest, and most legacy HD-capable hardware expect. MPEG-1 is the right choice only for Video CD (VCD) compatibility on very old standalone players; some other converters default the whole .mpeg category to MPEG-1, so check what your target device actually needs.
Because MPEG-2 needs roughly 2-3x the bitrate of H.264, and AV1 is more efficient than H.264 still. In our testing, a 60-second 1080p AV1 clip of about 8-10 MB expanded past 40 MB as an MPEG-2 program stream at a visually comparable bitrate. That size jump is the cost of the older codec, not a flaw in the conversion.
Not on its own. The .mpeg is just the video stream; a DVD-Video disc also needs a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP/VOB files and usually menus. Author the MPEG into a compliant disc image with DVDStyler, ImgBurn, or Nero, keep the MPEG-2 video bitrate at or below 9.8 Mbit/s, and use 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
