AV1 is the royalty-free codec the Alliance for Open Media published in 2018 for efficient streaming; .mpeg is the MPEG program stream that DVD authoring chains, pre-smart-TV set-top boxes and broadcast ingest systems have expected since the 1990s. Converting between them is a deliberate step backwards in efficiency, and it is worth doing only when the destination genuinely cannot read anything newer. This tutorial covers the settings that decide whether the result looks acceptable, what actually lands inside the file, and the disc-authoring numbers you need if a DVD is the end goal.
.mpeg output is written as MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio unless you change it; Video Codec also offers MPEG-1 for Video CD work, and Audio Codec offers AC3, MP3 and DTS (DCA)..mpeg. .mpeg on a data disc is not a DVD-Video disc. It still has to be authored into a VIDEO_TS folder structure with software such as DVDStyler or ImgBurn, using a compliant frame size and bitrate.If the goal is a smaller file, a sharper picture, or playback on a phone, a browser or a current editor, MPEG is the wrong target entirely — AV1 to MP4 plays nearly everywhere and stays dramatically smaller. AV1 to MPEG earns its place only when the destination is genuinely old or genuinely specific: a pre-2010 set-top box, a DVD or SVCD authoring chain, a broadcast system that ingests program streams. It also cannot bypass copy protection, so DRM-restricted sources will not process. And if you need MPEG-2 essence in a professional wrapper rather than a program stream, AV1 to MXF is the broadcast-facing option.
No, and it cannot. AV1 is already a lossy format, and MPEG-2 is both lossy and far less efficient, so this is a second-generation encode of material that has already been compressed once. At best the result looks the same as the source at a much higher bitrate; at worst, if you set an aggressive size target, it looks visibly worse. Convert to MPEG for hardware compatibility, never as a quality upgrade.
MPEG-2, unless you change it. Our encoder writes .mpeg as an MPEG program stream carrying MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio by default, which is what DVD-Video, SVCD, broadcast ingest and most legacy HD-capable hardware expect. MPEG-1 is in the Video Codec dropdown for one reason: Video CD compatibility on very old standalone players. Some other converters default the whole .mpeg category to MPEG-1, so if a device is fussy, check which one it actually wants.
.mpeg and .mpg are two spellings of the same thing — an MPEG program stream, written here with MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio, with MPEG-1 available and a choice of four audio codecs. AV1 to MPEG-2 writes the same program-stream wrapper but locks the essence down: MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio only, with no MPEG-1 fallback and no alternative audio codecs. Pick this page when you want the flexible container, and the MPEG-2 page when a spec sheet demands MPEG-2 essence specifically.
Because you are paying back two decades of codec research. AV1 reaches a given visual quality at a fraction of MPEG-2's bitrate, so an MPEG-2 encode that looks equivalent will typically be several times the size of the AV1 file it came from, with the gap widening on high-motion and high-resolution footage. If size matters more than legacy compatibility, convert to AV1 to MP4 instead.
Not by itself. The .mpeg is the video and audio stream; a DVD-Video disc also needs the VIDEO_TS folder with its IFO, BUP and VOB files, and usually a menu. Author the stream into a compliant image with DVDStyler, ImgBurn or Nero, use 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL, and keep the video bitrate at or below 9.8 Mbit/s with the total under 10.08 Mbit/s.
For almost everyone, no. VIA LA, which administers the MPEG-2 patent portfolio licence, states that the last US patent expired on 13 February 2018 and that patents remain presently active only in Malaysia, where royalties are still payable for products manufactured or sold there. The licensing programme itself still exists, so if you are shipping product into that market it is worth reading the terms — but for personal files, archives and normal distribution the essential patents have run out.
MP2, unless you have a reason not to. It is the audio format DVD-Video and legacy program-stream hardware were built around, and it is the most likely to decode on an unknown old device. Switch to AC3 if you need surround sound for a DVD project, MP3 if a specific software player prefers it, or DTS (DCA) only when a system explicitly asks for it. Modern targets do not need any of these — they want AAC, which means a different container.
Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, processed on our servers, and both the upload and the finished .mpeg are deleted automatically after a few hours. Files are never shared or made public, no account is needed, and nothing is watermarked. For very large AV1 sources the practical constraint is upload size and time over your connection rather than any per-file cap; trimming to a Time Range first reduces what you get back but not what you send.
