Convert DivX to OGA Online

DivX is a brand of MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) video, almost always carried in an AVI-derived container with an MP3 or AC-3 soundtrack. This tool throws away the picture, decodes that soundtrack, and re-encodes it into OGA — the audio-only Ogg file — using the royalty-free Vorbis codec by default. What you get back is the dialogue, score, lecture, or commentary as a standalone audio file.

How to Convert DivX to OGA

Choosing a Codec Inside the OGA File

An Ogg audio file is a container, not a codec. Four encoders are offered here, and the right one depends entirely on what the source audio was and where the file has to play.

What the .oga Extension Actually Means

The Ogg family's extensions are defined by RFC 5334, and they describe the payload rather than the quality.

How Channels and Sample Rate Are Handled

Leaving Audio Channel and Audio Sample Rate on ORIGINAL copies the source layout, which is what most extractions want. When you do change them, two encoder rules apply:

  • Downmixing is one-way. Setting Audio Channel to MONO from a stereo or 5.1 source folds the channels together permanently; there is no way to unfold them afterwards, so keep the DivX if you may need the full mix.
  • Sample rates snap to what the codec supports. Our encoder matches your requested rate to the nearest rate the chosen codec can actually write. For Vorbis that set is 22.05, 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz, so asking for 8 kHz or 16 kHz on a Vorbis track lands on 22.05 kHz instead. Opus works at 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 kHz, so a 44.1 kHz request on an Opus track becomes 48 kHz.
  • The sample rate does not rescue a bad source. Raising it above what the DivX contained adds bytes, not detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting DivX to OGA improve the audio quality?

No, and no tool can. The audio inside a .divx file is nearly always MP3 or AC-3, both lossy, so encoding it to Vorbis or Opus is a lossy-to-lossy transcode: information the first encoder discarded is gone for good. Choose a bitrate at or slightly above the source rate to avoid stacking a second visible round of loss on top of the first.

Is OGA the same thing as OGG?

Same container, different labelling convention. RFC 5334 assigns .oga to Ogg audio in general and reserves .ogg for files that contain nothing but a Vorbis bitstream, for compatibility with older software. Players that read one almost always read the other, so the practical difference is mostly what your file manager and media library make of the name. Prefer .ogg if an old player refuses .oga; use DivX to OGG for that.

Which codec should I pick inside the OGA file?

Vorbis for general music and web use — it is the default and the most widely recognised Ogg payload. Opus if the file is speech or you want the smallest usable file. FLAC only when the source itself was lossless, since it cannot restore anything an MP3 already threw away. Speex only if you are feeding a legacy voice system, because Xiph has retired it in favour of Opus.

Why did my chosen sample rate come out different?

Because the encoder snapped it to the nearest rate the codec accepts. Vorbis in our pipeline writes 22.05, 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz, and Opus writes 8, 12, 16, 24 or 48 kHz. Any other value in the Audio Sample Rate dropdown is matched to the closest supported one rather than failing the job.

Why is my output OGA file silent?

There was no usable audio track to extract. Some AVI-era captures are genuinely silent, and a few .divx files carry audio in a codec the source app never wrote correctly. The quick check: play the original in VLC. If VLC gives you sound, the track exists and will extract; if VLC is silent too, there is nothing to pull out.

Will an OGA file play on my phone, browser, and media player?

Vorbis in Ogg is well covered on the desktop and on Android — Android's own supported-formats documentation lists a Vorbis decoder on all versions with Ogg among the container formats. In browsers, caniuse's Ogg Vorbis data shows support from Chrome 4, Firefox 3.5 and Edge 17, with Safari only reaching full support in version 18.4 (earlier versions from 14.1 were partial). Hardware players, car head units and TVs are the weak spot. If you need something that plays without thinking about it, use DivX to MP3.

What bitrate should I choose?

Match the source rather than exceed it. A typical DivX-era MP3 track sits around 128–192 kbps, and a Vorbis encode at the same rate keeps what is left of it; Opus reaches similar perceived quality lower down the scale, so 96–128 kbps is usually enough for music and 32–64 kbps mono is fine for speech. If you would rather aim at a size, switch the compression mode to Specific file size and let the encoder solve for the bitrate.

What happens to the video track, and to my uploaded file?

The video is discarded — this is an extraction, so the .oga contains only audio.
