If your goal is to look at, print, share, or re-edit the photograph, wrapping it in a video stream costs you resolution and quality for nothing: a single-frame MPEG is larger than the equivalent still and cannot be opened by an image editor. Convert ARW to JPG for a universal picture, or ARW to TIFF for a lossless, high-bit-depth editing master. ARW to MPEG earns its place only when something downstream genuinely wants program-stream MPEG — a DVD authoring project, a legacy broadcast ingest, an editor that will not take modern containers. For a clip that just needs to play on phones and the web, ARW to MP4 is the better target.
No. An ARW is a photograph and carries no audio, so there is nothing to encode and the Audio Codec menu is hidden for image sources — the output is a video-only program stream. That is not a limitation of MPEG, which carries audio perfectly well in other contexts; it is simply that the source has none. If the clip needs music or narration, add it on a timeline in a video editor after conversion.
.mpeg output use?MPEG-2 by default, with MPEG-1 as the only alternative on this page. MPEG-2 video is the standard published jointly as ITU-T H.262 and ISO/IEC 13818-2 — the same video coding used for DVD-Video and for a generation of digital broadcast. MPEG-1 is the earlier, simpler standard and is worth choosing only when a very old decoder demands it, because it compresses a detailed photographic frame far less efficiently.
Two separate losses stack up. First, the raw is demosaiced and tone-mapped to become a picture at all, which bakes in white balance, exposure, and colour and spends the 12- or 14-bit latitude that made it worth shooting raw. Second, the frame is scaled to video dimensions and encoded at 8 bits per channel with lossy compression, so smooth skies and gradients are where banding shows up first. Raising the Quality Preset reduces the second loss; nothing recovers the first.
Image Duration controls it: the dropdown runs from a single frame at 60fps up to 10 seconds per frame, and 5 seconds per frame is pre-selected. One photograph at the default gives a five-second clip. With "Merge images" selected under Merge strategy, every uploaded ARW is held for that same duration and they play back to back, so the total length is the duration multiplied by the number of files. "Video per image" gives you one .mpeg per photograph instead.
.mp4?No, though the names overlap confusingly. A .mpeg file here is a program stream, designed for storage and local playback; a transport stream — .ts, .m2ts, .mts — is the broadcast and disc-oriented packaging built for error resilience, and MP4 is a different container entirely from the ISO base media file format family. They can all carry similar video, but players and authoring tools are fussy about which one they accept, so match the extension your pipeline asked for rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Because your camera's frame shape does not match the video frame it is being placed in. A 3:2 Sony still inside a 16:9 output leaves a gap on two sides, and that gap is filled with the Background Color setting, which defaults to White and can be set to any colour in the list. Leaving Video resolution on "Keep original" avoids the mismatch entirely in most cases; picking a fixed 1920 x 1080 reintroduces it.
Yes, within limits. Upload as many ARW files as you want, leave "Merge strategy" on "Merge images", and each photograph is shown in turn for the Image Duration you chose, producing a single continuous clip. What you will not get is transitions: there is no cross-fade, pan, or zoom between frames, just a cut from one still to the next. For anything with motion design, generate the clip here and treat it as raw material in an editor.

Note that MPEG-2 spends a lot of bits on a full-resolution static frame, so a long duration at high quality produces a surprisingly large file for a single photograph; shortening the duration is the quickest way to shrink it.
