Convert Image to 3G2 — And Whether 3G2 Is the Right Target
3G2 is the 3GPP2 multimedia file format: a slimmed-down relative of MP4, both built on the ISO base media file format, created for the CDMA2000 handsets that Verizon and Sprint ran. Turning a photo into one gives you a small, silent video clip that holds the picture on screen for a set number of seconds. Almost everyone who lands here is choosing between three near-identical containers, so the short answer first: pick 3G2 only when a CDMA-era device or a system standardised on 3GPP2 accepts nothing else, pick 3GP for the GSM-side equivalent, and pick MP4 for anything that has to play on hardware made in the last decade.
3G2 vs 3GP vs MP4
| Property | 3G2 | 3GP | MP4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defined by | 3GPP2 | 3GPP | ISO/IEC, as MPEG-4 Part 14 |
| Built for | CDMA2000 networks | GSM and UMTS networks | General-purpose delivery |
| Underlying structure | ISO base media file format | ISO base media file format | ISO base media file format |
| Media type | video/3gpp2 | video/3gpp | video/mp4 |
| Video codecs in the container | H.263, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2 (VP8 also permitted) | H.263, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2 | H.264, H.265, MPEG-4 Part 2, AV1 |
| Audio codecs in the container | AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC-LC and relatives | Same family | AAC, MP3, ALAC, Opus and others |
| Browser playback | Firefox for Android only | Firefox for Android only | Every current browser |
| Desktop playback | VLC, mpv, QuickTime | VLC, mpv, QuickTime | Everywhere |
| Still current? | No — the networks it served are gone | Rare, mostly legacy handsets | Yes, the default everywhere |
When to Pick 3G2
- A specific CDMA-era handset, in-car unit, or embedded player only accepts 3GPP2 files.
- A legacy ingest system validates the
video/3gpp2media type and rejects everything else. - You are reproducing or testing an archived mobile workflow and need the original container.
- You want the smallest possible clip and can accept a low frame size — 3GPP2 was designed for narrow mobile bandwidth.
When to Pick 3GP or MP4 Instead
- The file has to play on a phone, tablet, browser, TV or editor made in the last decade — MP4 is the only safe choice.
- Your legacy target is a GSM-era handset rather than a CDMA one — 3GP is the matching container.
- You need the picture to stay sharp at full resolution, which a mobile-bandwidth container is not designed to do.
- You actually wanted a short looping animation rather than a held frame — Image to GIF or Image to APNG is the better fit.
How to Convert Image to 3G2
- Upload Your Images: Drag files onto the page or click "+ Add Files". Thirty-six input formats are accepted, including JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF, ICO, EPS, PSD and camera RAW from every major brand (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, ORF, RAF, RW2 and more).
- Set Duration and Merge Strategy: The Duration dropdown holds each still on screen for anything from a single frame up to 10 seconds per frame, with 5 seconds per frame preselected. Merge strategy starts on "Merge images", chaining a batch into one slideshow; switch it to "Video per image" for one 3G2 per picture.
- Choose Video Codec, Video Resolution and Background Color: Video Codec offers H.264 by default plus MPEG-4, Xvid and H.263 for older targets. Video resolution starts on "Keep original" — pick a Preset or Fixed Resolution to force a small mobile frame. Background Color (White by default, with Black and a range of other named colours available) fills transparent pixels and any letterbox bars.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the
.3g2. Files upload over an encrypted connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.
Which Codec to Put Inside the 3G2
| Video Codec choice | What it actually is | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | MPEG-4 Part 10 / AVC — the default here | Any player from roughly 2005 onward, including VLC and QuickTime |
| MPEG-4 | MPEG-4 Part 2, the pre-H.264 mobile codec | A mid-2000s handset rejects the H.264 stream |
| Xvid | An MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder, interchangeable with the above in practice | You have a target that specifically names Xvid |
| H.263 | The ITU-T codec the earliest 3G phones were built to decode | The oldest CDMA-era hardware you can find |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a 3G2 file play on a modern phone?
Usually not. Current Android and iOS builds dropped 3GPP2 capture and playback long ago, and browsers do not decode it apart from Firefox for Android. On a desktop, VLC, mpv and QuickTime open 3G2 reliably while Windows Media Player and Photos often refuse it. If the file needs to reach an ordinary device, convert to MP4 instead.
Does the 3G2 clip have any sound?
No. A still picture carries no audio, so the converter writes a video-only file and the Audio Codec control is hidden on this page. The 3GPP2 container can carry AMR-NB, AMR-WB or AAC in general — there is simply nothing to encode from a photograph.
What is the actual difference between 3G2 and 3GP?
Which standards body defined it and which network family it served. 3GPP wrote 3GP for GSM and UMTS; 3GPP2 wrote 3G2 for CDMA2000. Both are cut-down ISO base media files and both carry broadly the same codecs, so structurally they are near-twins — the practical difference is which handset or ingest system will accept the file. Verizon decommissioned its CDMA network as of January 3, 2023, which is why 3G2 has essentially no live use case today.
Which image formats can I upload?
Thirty-six extensions in total: the everyday ones (JPG, JPEG, JFIF, PNG, APNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF/TIF, ICO, AVIF, HEIC/HEIF, PPM), design and document formats (PSD, XCF, EPS, ODG, PUB), and camera RAW from every major manufacturer — 3FR, ARW, CR2, CR3, CRW, DCR, DNG, ERF, MOS, MRW, NEF, ORF, PEF, RAF, RW2 and X3F.
What happens if I upload an animated GIF or APNG?
It is treated as motion rather than a still. A single animated source keeps all of its own frames and its own timing, so the resulting 3G2 plays the original animation instead of holding one frozen frame, and the Duration setting does not apply to it. Upload several separate still images if you want the fixed-duration slideshow behaviour instead.
How long will the clip be, and how do I make a slideshow?
Length comes entirely from Duration, never from the source file. One image at the 5-second default gives roughly a 5-second clip. Leave Merge strategy on "Merge images" and queue several pictures to build a slideshow: total length is the image count multiplied by the per-image duration, so eight photos at 3 seconds each produce a 24-second silent clip.
Why is my 3G2 so much smaller and softer than the source photo?
That is 3GPP2 doing its job. It was designed for narrow mobile bandwidth, so it compresses hard and expects a small frame. Our pipeline also re-encodes every uploaded image to a clean PNG capped at 4096 pixels on the long edge before encoding, and writes still-image sources at one frame per second — which is why a 24-megapixel RAW and a 2-megapixel JPEG can end up at very similar sizes. If sharpness matters more than the container, use Image to MP4 or resize deliberately with the image resizer first.
What happens to my uploaded files?
They are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and files are never shared or made public.
