M2TS is the BDAV transport stream that camcorders and Blu-ray discs record to — usually H.264 HD video that older DVD players, set-top boxes, and DVD-authoring software refuse to open. This tool re-encodes that file into a plain .mpeg program stream (MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio), the format DVD-era hardware and authoring apps expect. It is a true re-encode rather than a rename: H.264 is decoded and re-compressed to MPEG-2, so plan on some generation loss and, if your source is HD, a step down toward SD resolution.

MPEG-2 was built for discs, not the modern web — it is less efficient than H.264, so a .mpeg file is larger at the same quality and many phones and browsers will not stream it. If your goal is sharing, streaming, or playback on a phone, computer, or smart TV, convert your camcorder footage with M2TS to MP4 instead and keep the H.264 video without a generation-loss penalty. Most DVD players, older media players, and DVD-authoring tools cannot demux a BDAV transport stream or decode its H.264 HD video. Converting to an MPEG-2 program stream rewraps the video in the container and codec that DVD-era hardware and authoring software expect, which is usually what makes the file playable or burnable.
Some, yes. M2TS typically holds H.264, while xconvert's .mpeg output uses MPEG-2 — a less efficient codec — so the file is decoded and re-encoded, which always costs a little quality (generation loss). To minimize it, keep the Quality Preset high. If preserving quality matters more than DVD compatibility, convert to MP4 instead, which can carry the original H.264 video.
Not automatically — the conversion keeps your source resolution unless you change it. But DVD-Video is a standard-definition format, so if you are converting to burn a disc you will usually want to downscale 1080p to a DVD frame using the Preset Resolutions or Width x Height controls before converting.
MPEG-2 is less space-efficient than H.264, so a .mpeg can be larger than the source M2TS at matching quality; use Specific file size if you need to fit a disc. In our testing, a 60-second 1080p M2TS clip re-encoded to MPEG-2 at the Very High preset produced a file in the 30-45 MB range, varying with motion and detail. The real ceiling on big camcorder files is upload size and time over your connection, not the conversion itself.
