How to Convert M4R to M4B Online

  1. Upload your M4R: Drag .m4r files onto the page or click the upload button. Several files can be converted in one batch.
  2. Set the bitrate: Audio Codec is AAC on this page, the same codec the ringtone uses. Under File Compression pick a Quality Preset (Highest down to Lowest), a Constant Bitrate from 8 to 384 kbps, one of five AAC Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k), a Custom Bitrate in kbps, or a specific target file size.
  3. Channel, sample rate and trim (optional): Audio Channel offers Original, Mono or Stereo; Audio Sample Rate offers Original or 8000 to 48000 Hz. Trim keeps a section defined by a start time and a duration.
  4. Convert and download: Click Convert. The result is AAC audio in an MPEG-4 file with the .m4b extension. Files are uploaded over TLS, processed on xconvert's servers and deleted automatically after a few hours.

Why Would You Convert a Ringtone to M4B?

Honestly, it is an unusual path. M4R and M4B are the same kind of file, AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, and the extension is what changes how software treats it. An M4R tells Apple software "this is a ringtone"; an M4B says "this is an audiobook". Audiobook apps such as Apple Books file M4B separately from music, usually remember where you stopped, and show chapters when a file has them. For a clip of up to 30 seconds, most of that matters very little. There are still a few good reasons:

  • An app that only lists audiobooks. Some audiobook players and library tools only pick up .m4b files. If you are collecting short clips there, such as language-learning snippets, sound cues or a recorded greeting, M4B gets them in.
  • Audiobook and podcast production. A workflow that expects every asset as M4B, for example an intro jingle or a chapter stinger built from a tone, can take the file without a rename step.
  • Testing an audiobook player or tag tool. A short M4B is a quick, small test file.
  • Keeping clips out of your music library. Files filed as audiobooks do not end up shuffled between your songs.

If you simply want to listen to or edit the tone, M4R to M4A is the more natural choice, and if it should stay a ringtone, keep it as M4R.

M4R vs M4B — Format Comparison

Property M4R M4B
Container MPEG-4 MPEG-4
Audio codec AAC (AAC-LC) AAC (written by this page)
Apple software treats it as A ringtone or alert tone An audiobook
Playback position Not applicable Usually remembered by audiobook apps
Chapters No Supported by the format; none are added here
Typical length Up to 30 seconds, per Apple Minutes to many hours
Usable as an iPhone ringtone Yes No

Which MPEG-4 Extension Do You Need?

All of these carry AAC audio; the right one depends on where the file is going.

Extension Container What Apple software does with it Pick it when
.m4r MPEG-4 Lists it as a ringtone or tone You want an iPhone ringtone
.m4a MPEG-4 Files it as music You want to listen to or edit the clip
.m4b MPEG-4 Files it as an audiobook An audiobook app or workflow needs it
.aac None (ADTS stream) Plays it as audio; no cover art A tool wants a raw AAC stream

For lossy AAC the size follows the bitrate: kbps × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes. A 30-second clip at 64 kbps is about 240 KB; at 128 kbps about 480 KB.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert a ringtone to an audiobook format at all?

Mostly for software that only accepts audiobooks, or for production workflows that expect M4B everywhere. If neither applies, M4A or M4R is the better destination. The conversion is valid and works well; it is just rarely needed.

Is the audio different from the M4R?

The codec is the same, AAC, but this page re-encodes it: the ringtone is decoded and encoded again with the settings you choose. That costs a small amount of quality, which stays very hard to hear at or above the ringtone's own bitrate.

Can I just rename .m4r to .m4b instead?

Often, yes. Because both are AAC in MPEG-4, a renamed file usually plays in audiobook apps, and renaming changes no audio. Convert here when you also want to trim, change the bitrate, or switch to mono.

Will the M4B have chapter markers?

No. This page has no chapter controls, so the output is a single track without chapters. For a clip of up to 30 seconds that is rarely a problem, and audiobook apps simply show the file as one short title.

Can I use the M4B as an iPhone ringtone?

No. iPhone lists custom ringtones from .m4r files. The reverse direction also exists: M4B to M4R turns a passage of an audiobook into a ringtone, with a note under Trim's Duration about Apple's 30-second ringtone length.

What bitrate suits a spoken clip?

Speech needs far less data than music. A Constant Bitrate of 64 kbps in Mono, or one of the middle AAC Variable Bitrate bands, keeps narration clear in a very small file. For music, stay at or above the ringtone's own bitrate.

Can I convert several clips at once?

Yes. Add all the .m4r files together and each becomes its own M4B with the same settings. The files are not joined into one audiobook; each stays a separate track.

What happens to my files?

They are uploaded over TLS (HTTPS), processed on xconvert's servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. Protected (DRM) files cannot be converted. For other formats, see the M4R converter.
