MTS is the file extension used by AVCHD camcorders — an MPEG-2 transport stream wrapping H.264 video, developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic in 2006. APNG (Animated PNG) is a lossless animated image format that extends PNG with multiple frames while keeping full 24-bit color and 8-bit alpha transparency. This converter turns a short clip from your AVCHD footage into a self-contained animated image you can embed in a web page, README, or chat without a video player.

APNG keeps full 24-bit color and smooth 8-bit alpha transparency, so gradients, anti-aliased edges, and skin tones stay clean. GIF is capped at 256 colors per frame with only on/off transparency, which produces visible banding and "halo" edges on camcorder footage. The tradeoff is size: an APNG is usually larger than the same clip as GIF. If you need the smallest file, convert MTS to animated WebP instead; if you need to share to a legacy client, convert MTS to GIF.
Keep it to a few seconds. APNG stores every frame losslessly, so a 1080p clip at 10 FPS adds up quickly — a 10-second clip can run to tens of megabytes. Trim to the moment you want and consider dropping the resolution with the Preset Resolutions control before converting.
No. APNG is an image format and has no audio track, so the AC-3 or PCM audio in your AVCHD clip is discarded. If you need the sound, keep an MP4 alongside it — you can convert MTS to MP4 for a playable video with audio.
APNG supports 8-bit alpha, but standard camcorder video is fully opaque — there is no alpha channel in an MTS recording to preserve. Transparency only matters if you later edit the frames to add it. The benefit you do get for free is clean, lossless color with no GIF-style dithering.
The roughly 5% of browsers without APNG support display the first frame as a normal static PNG instead of the animation. Nothing breaks — the image still renders — so a sensible first frame is a good idea if your audience may include older browsers.
For most footage, 10 FPS (Recommended) is the sweet spot between smoothness and file size. In our testing, a 3-second 768p clip at 10 FPS produced a noticeably smaller APNG than the same clip at 30 FPS while still reading as smooth motion. Raise to 15 or 30 FPS only when the motion is fast and you can accept a larger file.
The APNG container itself is lossless, so at ORIGINAL Colors and 100% Image quality no extra compression artifacts are introduced beyond what was already in the H.264 source. Lowering Image quality (%) or enabling color reduction trades some fidelity for a smaller file.
