OGV is the Ogg video container, almost always carrying Theora video with Vorbis audio — an open, royalty-free web format that has fallen out of use (Chrome dropped Theora playback in version 123, March 2024). VOB (Video Object) is the DVD-Video container that holds the MPEG-2 streams stored inside a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder. This converter re-encodes your Ogg/Theora video into MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio so it can be fed into DVD-authoring software. Worth knowing up front: a bare .vob file is not a finished DVD, and Theora to MPEG-2 is a lossy re-encode — so do this only when you specifically need a DVD-authoring input, not for general playback.

A single .vob holds the multiplexed MPEG-2 audio/video stream, but a playable DVD also needs the .IFO (navigation) and .BUP (backup) files and the full VIDEO_TS folder structure. Some media players (VLC, MPC-HC) will open a lone VOB as a plain MPEG-2 file, but to make a disc a DVD player recognizes, load the VOB into DVD-authoring software (such as DVD Flick, ImgBurn, or DVDStyler) to generate VIDEO_TS.
No. Theora to MPEG-2 is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode, so you can only preserve or lose detail, never add it. MPEG-2 is also far less efficient than modern codecs, so a VOB will be considerably larger than the source for the same visual quality. Convert to VOB only when a DVD-authoring workflow requires it.
The output is DVD-compliant MPEG-2 (H.262) video with AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio — the standard combination DVD players expect. The VOB container does not accept AAC or MP4 audio, which is why the Vorbis track in your OGV is re-encoded rather than copied through.
DVD-Video uses 720×480 at 29.97 fps for NTSC regions (North America, Japan) and 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL regions (most of Europe, Australia). Choosing the matching Preset Resolution avoids your authoring tool re-scaling the video a second time. In our testing, a short 1080p Theora clip exported cleanly to a 720×480 MPEG-2 VOB at the default Very High preset.
OGV relies on the Theora codec, which Google removed from Chrome and Edge in version 123 (March 2024), and which Firefox has also phased out. If a modern browser refuses to play your .ogv, converting it is the practical fix — though for everyday playback on phones, TVs, and browsers, MP4 (H.264) is a much better target than VOB.
