It is useful when you need a still to play as a video (a title card, a slideshow segment, or a placeholder clip), but if you actually want an editable photo, convert to RAF to JPG or RAF to TIFF instead — those keep it as an image.

The output is a video, not a photo. xconvert renders the RAF as a fixed-length MPEG clip that displays the single frame for the duration you set, with no audio track (a still image has no sound to carry). The RAW's wide tonal latitude — Fujifilm captures 12 or 14 bits per channel — is baked down to standard 8-bit video, and the embedded preview/scene colors are flattened into the MPEG stream. For grading, exposure recovery, or printing, you want a real image format; the MPEG path is for playback and timeline use only.

How to Convert RAF to MPEG

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the MPEG clip have any sound?
No. A RAF is a single photo with no audio, so the output is a silent MPEG video showing that one frame. There is nothing to add a soundtrack from; if you need audio, you would have to add it later in a video editor.
Why does my 14-bit RAF look flatter as MPEG?
RAF stores 12 or 14 bits per channel of tonal latitude, but MPEG-2 video is 8-bit 4:2:0. The conversion bakes the RAW down to standard video levels, so the shadow and highlight headroom you would use in a RAW editor is gone. For full latitude, convert to RAF to TIFF instead and edit the image directly.
Should I convert RAF to MPEG or to a photo format?
If you want to view, print, or edit the picture, convert to an image — RAF to JPG for sharing or RAF to TIFF for editing. Choose MPEG only when you specifically need the frame as a playable video clip, for example to drop a still into a video timeline or a slideshow.
How long is the output clip?
It matches the Image Duration you select. The default is 5 seconds per frame, and presets range from a fraction of a second up to several seconds. In our testing, a single RAF at the 5-second default produces a roughly 5-second MPEG-2 clip at the chosen resolution.
Can I make one clip from several RAF photos?
Yes. Add multiple RAF files and use the Merge strategy option: "Merge images" stitches the frames into one sequential clip (each shown for the set duration), while "Video per image" outputs a separate clip per file.
What resolution will the video be?
By default xconvert keeps the original frame dimensions, but under Video resolution you can pick a fixed preset (such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720) or set a custom width or height while preserving aspect ratio. Any padding needed to fit the frame uses the Background Color you choose.
Is my RAF file kept private?
Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and your file is never shared or made public.
What players will open the resulting MPEG file?
The output is a standard MPEG program stream carrying MPEG-2 video, so it plays in VLC, in legacy DVD-era hardware and software players, and imports cleanly into most video editors as a timeline clip. On a modern phone or browser MPEG-2 support is patchier than in a typical MP4, so if you plan to share the clip online rather than edit it, a more modern video container is the more portable choice.
