ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's container for Windows Media video and audio — usually WMV video with WMA sound. VOB (Video Object) is the container that lives inside a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder: an MPEG-2 program stream with AC-3, LPCM, or MPEG audio. Converting ASF to VOB re-encodes a Windows Media file into the codec and container a DVD-authoring program expects. One honest caveat up front: a single .vob file is not a playable DVD on its own — see the FAQ below for why and what to do with the output.

No. A standalone .vob holds the multiplexed MPEG-2 video and audio, but a real DVD also needs the IFO (information) and BUP (backup) files that sit alongside it in a VIDEO_TS folder. Those files carry the menu, chapter, and navigation data a DVD player reads first. Most software players will still play a lone .vob as a regular video, but a DVD player or set-top box expects the full VIDEO_TS structure, which you create with a DVD-authoring program after this conversion.
Some, yes. WMV (the usual ASF video codec) and VOB's MPEG-2 are both lossy, so this is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode — you cannot recover detail that ASF compression already discarded, and MPEG-2 is older and less efficient than modern codecs. In our testing, keeping the "Very High" Quality Preset and a DVD-legal resolution (720×480 or 720×576) holds the visible quality close to the source while staying inside DVD-Video's 9.8 Mbit/s video ceiling.
Only convert to VOB if a DVD-authoring workflow specifically needs MPEG-2 in a DVD container. For playback on phones, smart TVs, browsers, and editors, MP4 (H.264) is smaller, sharper at the same size, and far more widely supported — try ASF to MP4 instead. VOB exists to bridge into the DVD-Video format, not to modernize a file.
VOB only allows the audio types the DVD-Video spec permits: LPCM, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), DTS, or MPEG-1 Audio Layer II. The WMA track inside your ASF is re-encoded to a DVD-legal format — AAC is explicitly disallowed in VOB, so it is never used here.
DVD-Video only accepts a fixed set of frame sizes: 720×480, 704×480, 352×480, or 352×240 for NTSC, and 720×576, 704×576, 352×576, or 352×288 for PAL. If your ASF is, say, 1280×720, choose a DVD-legal preset in the Video resolution controls before converting so a DVD-authoring tool will accept the file without re-scaling it again.
