How to Convert M4R to AIFC

  1. Upload Your M4R Ringtone: Drag .m4r files onto the page or click "+ Add Files". Several tones can be queued and converted with the same settings.
  2. Pick the Encoding Inside the AIFC: Audio Codec offers PCM 16-bit Big Endian (plain uncompressed PCM), PCM 16-bit Little Endian (sowt), PCM A-law and PCM mu-law. Choose the one your target tool asks for.
  3. Set Channel, Sample Rate and Trim (Optional): Keep Audio Channel and Audio Sample Rate on "ORIGINAL" for a straight decode, or change them if the destination needs mono or a fixed rate. Trim keeps only the section you need.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the .aifc. Files are sent over TLS, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up and no watermark.

What AIFC Is, and When a Ringtone Needs It

An M4R is an iPhone ringtone: AAC-LC audio in an MPEG-4 container, built exactly like an M4A but carrying the .m4r extension so iOS, the Finder and iTunes treat it as a tone. Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, so these files are small and short.

AIFC — also written AIFF-C — is the extended version of AIFF that Apple published in 1991. The "C" stands for compression, but the format does not force any. What AIFF-C adds is a compression-type field in the COMM chunk, so the file can declare an encoding other than classic big-endian PCM: byte-swapped samples (sowt), A-law (alaw), mu-law (ulaw) and older Apple codecs. It can just as well declare NONE and hold plain uncompressed PCM.

That flexibility is why some tools ask for .aifc specifically. Typical cases for a ringtone:

  • An asset pipeline, script or legacy Mac application that expects .aifc files and rejects other extensions.
  • A voice or telephony system that wants 8-bit A-law or mu-law, where the smaller payload matters more than fidelity.
  • A tool that reads little-endian samples and expects them labelled sowt inside an AIFF-C wrapper.

If none of these apply and you simply want to edit the tone on a Mac, plain AIFF is the more widely expected target — see M4R to AIFF.

Will This Recover the Quality the M4R Lost?

No, and the name invites the wrong assumption. The AAC in your M4R is lossy; the detail it discarded is gone. Converting to AIFC decodes that AAC and stores the result — uncompressed if you pick 16-bit PCM, or companded to 8 bits if you pick A-law or mu-law. Either way, the AIFC can only match the ringtone or fall slightly below it, while the file grows several times larger. Keep your .m4r.

M4R vs AIFC at a Glance

Property M4R (input) AIFC (output)
Purpose iPhone custom ringtone Flexible Apple audio container for editing and interchange
Published MPEG-4 audio with Apple's tone extension 1991, Apple, as an extension of AIFF
Audio inside AAC-LC, lossy PCM (16-bit) or 8-bit A-law / mu-law
How the encoding is declared MPEG-4 sample description Compression type in the COMM chunk
Typical length 30 seconds or less Any length
30 s stereo at 44.1 kHz about 480 KB at 128 kbps about 5.3 MB (16-bit) or 2.6 MB (8-bit)
Readers iPhone, Mac, iTunes, most players macOS apps, DAWs, samplers, audio libraries

The Four Encodings Compared

Audio Codec AIFF-C compression type Bytes per sample, per channel 30 s stereo, 44.1 kHz Good for
PCM 16-bit Big Endian NONE (plain PCM) 2 about 5.3 MB General editing, maximum compatibility
PCM 16-bit Little Endian sowt 2 about 5.3 MB Tools that expect byte-swapped samples
PCM A-law alaw 1 about 2.6 MB A-law telephony and voice prompts
PCM mu-law ulaw 1 about 2.6 MB mu-law telephony and voice prompts

With 16-bit big-endian PCM the audio needs no AIFF-C features at all, so some tools will report such a file simply as AIFF. That is expected: classic AIFF and AIFF-C hold big-endian PCM in the same way.

AIFC, AIFF or AIF?

  • AIFC when a tool asks for .aifc, or when you need A-law, mu-law or little-endian samples declared in the header.
  • AIFF or AIF when you just want an uncompressed file for Logic Pro, GarageBand or a sampler; the two extensions are the same format.
  • WAV when the file is going to a Windows tool — M4R to WAV writes the little-endian equivalent most non-Apple software prefers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AIFC compress my ringtone, since the "C" stands for compressed?

Only if you choose a companded codec. With PCM 16-bit Big Endian or Little Endian the samples are stored uncompressed, so the AIFC is far larger than the M4R. A-law and mu-law store 8 bits per sample, which halves the size compared with 16-bit PCM, but they are telephony encodings rather than music codecs.

Will converting M4R to AIFC restore lost quality?

No. Decoding lossy AAC cannot recreate what the encoder removed. The 16-bit options preserve what is left exactly as your phone plays it; the 8-bit options lose a little more to companding.

Which encoding should I pick?

PCM 16-bit Big Endian unless a tool tells you otherwise. It is the most widely readable choice and keeps the decoded audio intact. Pick sowt, A-law or mu-law only to satisfy a specific requirement.

Why does an older program refuse my AIFC file?

Some older software understands only classic AIFF and stops when it sees an AIFF-C header or a compression type other than NONE. Try converting again with PCM 16-bit Big Endian, or use the AIFF page if the program needs the .aiff extension.

How large will my AIFC be?

For 16-bit PCM: about 176 KB per second of 44.1 kHz stereo, so about 5.3 MB for a 30-second tone, or half that in mono. For A-law or mu-law, halve those figures again. The M4R's original bitrate does not affect the result.

Can I make a ringtone from the AIFC again later?

Yes. After editing, AIFC to M4R turns it back into an iPhone tone; keep the duration to 30 seconds or less, which is the length Apple documents for ringtones.

How are my files handled?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after processing. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and you can use the page on any device. Every other output format for ringtones is listed on the M4R Converter.
