MPEG-2 to M4B Converter

MPEG-2 is a video format from the DVD and digital-broadcast era; M4B is an MPEG-4 audio container used for audiobooks. This converter extracts the audio track from your MPEG-2 file and encodes it to M4B (AAC) — the video is discarded, so the output is audio only. M4B carries the same AAC audio as M4A but uses the .m4b extension to signal audiobook players, which is why it suits recorded lectures, talks, and long-form spoken-word material.

How to Convert MPEG-2 to M4B

  1. Upload Your MPEG-2 File: Drag and drop your .mpeg / .mpg file or click "Add Files." You can queue several files to convert with the same settings.
  2. Set the Quality Preset: Under File Compression, leave Quality Preset on its high default, or switch to Custom Bitrate / Constant Bitrate to pin a specific AAC rate such as 128 kbps for spoken word.
  3. Adjust Audio Channel, Sample Rate, or Trim (Optional): Set Audio Channel to mono to shrink talk recordings, change the Audio Sample Rate, or use Trim to keep only part of the recording.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and download your M4B file. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the M4B file keep any video from the MPEG-2?

No. M4B is an audio-only container, so the conversion extracts the audio track and discards the MPEG-2 video entirely. If you need the picture, convert to a video format such as MP4 instead.

Will I lose audio quality converting MPEG-2 to M4B?

The audio inside an MPEG-2 file is already lossy — usually MP2 or AC-3 — and M4B uses lossy AAC, so this is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode. It cannot recover detail the source lost, but at 128 kbps or higher the difference is hard to notice for speech. In our testing, a one-hour talk recorded at MP2 192 kbps re-encoded to AAC 128 kbps produced a roughly 55 MB M4B with no audible loss for spoken word.

What is the difference between M4B and M4A here?

Both use the MPEG-4 container and AAC audio, so they are technically near-identical. The .m4b extension tells audiobook players to treat the file as an audiobook — enabling resume/bookmarking and chapter navigation in apps like Apple Books. If you don't need those features, convert to M4A instead.

Does the output include chapter markers?

The M4B container supports chapter markers, but this converter extracts a single continuous audio track, so it does not auto-generate chapters from the MPEG-2. You can add chapters afterward in an audiobook editor if you need them.

Should I use M4B or MP3 for a recorded lecture?

Choose M4B if you'll listen in an audiobook app and want it to remember where you stopped. Choose MP3 for the widest device compatibility and simpler sharing — for that, use MPEG-2 to MP3 instead.

Can I convert only part of the recording?

Yes. Open the Trim control and set a start time and duration to keep just the segment you want; the rest of the audio is dropped from the output. For finer cuts you can also use the audio cutter.

How are my files handled during conversion?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and files are never shared or made public.
