This extracts the soundtrack from an MPEG-2 program stream — a DVD rip, a broadcast capture, an old .mpg archive — and writes it into an Ogg container as an audio-only .oga file. The video is discarded. What makes .oga more interesting than most audio extensions is that it does not name a codec: Ogg is a container, and this page lets you choose Vorbis, Opus, Speex or FLAC to sit inside it. Vorbis is the preselected choice and is the right one for most people; the rest of this page explains when it is not, and where the sample-rate and bitrate controls behave differently than you would expect.

RFC 5334, which registered the Ogg media types, makes .oga the general-purpose extension for an Ogg file whose content is predominantly audio, and reserves .ogg for backward compatibility with files containing only a Vorbis bitstream. In practice .ogg remains far more widely recognised by software, so if a player rejects your .oga the first thing to try is renaming it — the bytes are the same. Vorbis, which is already selected. It is efficient on music and mixed film audio, it is the most widely supported codec inside Ogg, and it matches what most software expects to find in an Ogg audio file. Opus is a better choice if the material is mostly speech or you are targeting low bitrates, and FLAC if this is an archive copy you do not want to degrade further. Speex is only appropriate for narrowband voice.
No. MPEG-2 program streams from DVD and broadcast carry MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby AC-3 audio, both of which are lossy — information was discarded when the disc or broadcast was made. Encoding that to Vorbis or Opus is a second lossy pass, which at a sensible bitrate is close to transparent but never additive. Choosing FLAC avoids adding a second generation of loss, but it preserves the already-lossy source exactly; it does not restore anything.
For a DVD soundtrack, the 128K to 192K entries are the usual sweet spot and 256K is comfortably beyond what most listeners can distinguish from the source. Because Vorbis works in quality mode, those entries describe a target quality rather than a hard rate — quiet passages use fewer bits and busy ones use more. Only go higher if you are working from unusually clean source audio, and stay at 320K or below to remain on the quality ladder.
Because Opus does not have a 44.1 kHz mode. The codec is defined for 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 kHz internally, so a 44100 Hz request cannot be honoured literally. Rather than refusing the conversion, our pipeline converts the request to 48000 Hz and encodes normally. The audible difference is nil; the only practical consequence is that a tool inspecting the file will report 48 kHz.
.oga?The container and Vorbis both support multichannel audio, but be aware of which track gets picked. This page has no track selector, so when a DVD program stream carries both a 5.1 mix and a stereo mix, the converter takes the stream with the most channels — the surround one — and breaks ties by lowest stream index. If you want a predictable two-channel result instead, set Audio Channel to Stereo, which downmixes rather than leaving the channel layout to chance.
.oga files?VLC, foobar2000, mpv, Audacious and most Linux desktop players handle them natively, as do Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. Safari support arrived later: Apple added Opus and Vorbis in Ogg containers in Safari 18.4 (macOS 15.4, iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4). Hardware is the weak point — car stereos, older iPods and many standalone players have no Ogg support at all. When maximum compatibility matters more than open formats, MPEG-2 to MP3 is the safer target.
Yes. The Trim control takes a Start time and a Duration, entered in seconds or as HH:MM:SS.sss, and only that span is encoded. Do the trimming here rather than afterwards if you can — Audio Cutter does not accept video files, so cutting before conversion means using Video Cutter on the MPEG-2 source, which is a slower route for a long capture.
The MPEG-2 upload and the resulting .oga are both deleted automatically after a few hours. Transfers use an encrypted connection and the conversion runs on our servers; there is no account to create, nothing is watermarked, and files are never shared or made public.
